Top Manufacturers of Compact Power Generation Units for Military Applications

“Compact power generation” now means far more than a small engine generator. Here are the technologies that generate power in the field and the manufacturers behind each.

The short answer

Top manufacturers of compact power generation for military applications include New Use Energy (solar-first SunCase™ battery generators and SunFold240™ arrays), SFC Energy (JENNY and EMILY methanol fuel cells), PowerFilm (flexible portable solar), Galvion (charge-on-the-move power scavenging), and makers of tactical and commercial engine generators for higher continuous loads. The trend is hybrid: compact solar and fuel cell generation feeding silent battery storage.

02Why the field is moving to hybrids

Engine generators sized for peak load spend most of their life running lightly loaded — loud, hot and inefficient. Compact hybrids flip the model: solar or fuel cells generate continuously at a modest rate, a battery delivers the peaks, and the engine generator (if any) runs briefly at efficient load to top up. The result is less fuel, fewer maintenance hours and a far smaller signature.

Solar-first, never solar-only

NUE builds solar-first battery generators, and they also recharge from AC, vehicles and fuel cells. NUE offers the SunCase™ 605 with the SFC EFOY 150 fuel cell for missions without reliable sun.

03Frequently asked questions

Who makes compact power generators for the military?
Manufacturers include New Use Energy (solar-first battery generators), SFC Energy (methanol fuel cells), PowerFilm (flexible solar), Galvion (charge-on-the-move scavenging) and tactical and commercial engine generator makers for large continuous loads.
What is the quietest compact power generation for military use?
Solar charging a battery generator is silent. Methanol fuel cells are near-silent. Engine generators are the loudest option.
Are engine generators still needed?
For large continuous loads such as environmental control, yes. In hybrid systems they run less often, at efficient load, mainly to recharge batteries.
