A dropped net costs more than any power system. Here are the UPS architectures available to tactical communications, what each protects against, and how to size one for the field.
UPS options for tactical communications range from offline/standby UPS (lowest cost, a few-millisecond transfer), to line-interactive (voltage regulation), to online double-conversion (zero transfer, clean output, most protection), to an always-on battery architecture in which a rugged battery generator powers the comms stack continuously while solar, vehicle or generator sources recharge it. In the field, the always-on approach provides UPS-like continuity plus hours of runtime.
| Topology | How it works | Transfer time | Protects against | Field fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Offline / standby | Loads on source power; switches to battery on failure | Typically several ms | Outages | Garrison, non-critical |
| Line-interactive | Adds voltage regulation; switches on failure | Typically a few ms | Outages, sags, swells | Shelters on grid or generator |
| Online double-conversion | Loads always run from inverter fed by battery/rectifier | Zero | Outages, sags, surges, frequency drift, noise | Critical C2 on generator power |
| Always-on battery generator | Loads always run from battery; sources only charge it | None while battery has charge | Source loss, generator stops, solar dips | Expeditionary comms; silent ops |
Tactical generators produce power that can sag under step loads and drift in frequency. Sensitive radio chargers, crypto equipment and servers do best on conditioned power. A battery between the generator and the loads — either an online UPS or an always-on battery generator — absorbs those transients and keeps the net up when the generator stops for fuel or maintenance.
Only comms and C2 — not lighting or comfort loads.
Minutes (to start a generator) or hours (to cover a night or a fuel cycle).
Continuous rating ≥ 1.25× protected load.
Load W × ride-through hours ÷ 0.85.
For pass-through charging units, test the switchover with your actual equipment.
Many portable power stations can power loads while charging (pass-through). Transfer behavior differs between products and configurations. NUE engineers will help validate SunCaseâ„¢ pass-through behavior with your specific comms equipment before deployment.
One-person carry with team-level capacity for radios, EUDs, drone batteries and SATCOM.
Two-person lift. Runs a TOC's comms stack, laptops, lighting and charging banks.
